Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic Surgery

The pancreas is a large organ that is located behind the stomach which functions as both a digestive and hormonal gland. It produces and releases enzymes during digestion which assist the body in absorbing foods, especially fats. The pancreas also makes insulin and glucagon, hormones which help the body regulate blood sugar levels.

Pancreatic cancer may consist of a tumor which grows but does not cause any symptoms at first. Symptoms of pancreatic cancer include pain or discomfort in the upper part of the abdomen, loss of one's appetite, weight loss, jaundice, fatigue, weakness, and nausea. Tumors in the pancreas may cause swelling as well as larger problems throughout the body due to a hormone overproduction. Surgery may be required to remove or resection that part of the pancreas which is diseased.

Our Tampa laparoscopic surgeon and the surgical team can perform laparoscopic surgery to address both benign and malignant tumors in this organ. Patients in whom pancreatic cancer can be completely removed through surgical techniques have a good prognosis.
