Stomach Ulcer Disease

What is Stomach Ulcer Disease?

Stomach ulcer disease consists of painful sores or lesions located in the lining of the stomach or part of the small intestines. These ulcers are referred to as peptic ulcers because the stomach acids named hydrochloric acid and pepsin are produced in these organs. Ulcers develop due to stomach infections from bacteria called helicobacter pylori as well as from an overproduction of stomach acids. Excessive use of painkillers, such as aspirin and ibuprofen also contribute to an erosion of the stomach lining which can develop into ulcers. Other contributing factors include smoking, caffeine, alcohol, and stress.

Symptoms of stomach ulcers include pain in the stomach between meals and at night when the stomach is empty, heartburn, belching, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss. If left untreated, ulcers can bleed, perforate (eating a hole in the wall of the stomach), swell and scar which may narrow and obstruct the intestinal opening. Besides medications and antibiotics, laparoscopic surgery is performed to treat ulcers, which involves a small number of tiny incisions as opposed to the long incision used in conventional surgery. The Tampa laparoscopic surgeon at our offices can discuss with you the use of laparoscopic surgery to treat your specific case of stomach ulcers.
